  Associate Director of Development or Development Director
  Founded in 1969, Lawyers Alliance for New York, is the leading provider of business and transactional legal services to nonprofit organizations that are improving quality of life in New York City neighborhoods. Our clients develop affordable housing, stimulate economic development, improve urban health, promote community arts, and operate and advocate for vital programs for young people, the elderly, and other low-income New Yorkers. Our staff of 22 and network of 1,600 volunteers strengthens nonprofit organizations' programs, finances, and operations.

We seek an experienced development professional to play a significant role in our development operation, taking on increasing responsibility and ownership during an anticipated period of growth for our organization. The Associate Director of Development or Development Director will report to our Deputy Executive Director/Director of Institutional Advancement.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Work with the Director of Institutional Advancement and the Development Committee of Lawyers Alliance's Board of Directors to prepare and implement an annual fundraising plan to achieve annual budgeted goals for contributed revenues from foundations, law firms, individuals, banks, corporations, and special events.
  • Expand private foundation funding through new funders and increased grants from repeat funders. Identify and seek new sources of foundation support for Lawyers Alliance's program priority areas, special initiatives, and general operating support. Manage Lawyers Alliance's existing and new foundation funder relationships.
  • Research and collect information for, write, prepare, and submit clear and persuasive letters of inquiry, grant proposals, fundraising appeal letters, and reports. Work with staff attorneys and program staff to articulate a compelling vision of Lawyers Alliance and its positive impact on organizations serving low-income New Yorkers.
  • Support and execute a successful annual law firm appeal, chaired by a law firm managing partner and involving contributions from dozens of national law firms.
  • Undertake a major role in organizing the annual Business Law & Leadership Gala, including planning, honoree and sponsor recruitment, invitations, venue logistics, program, and promotion, to insure a successful fundraising event attended by hundreds of leaders from the legal and business communities.
  • Take primary responsibility for appeals aimed at banks and corporations.
  • Supervise the Development Coordinator and the Development Coordinator's work product, helping the DC to grow professionally with respect to skills key to the organization's successful fundraising operation, and work closely with the Development Coordinator on the annual individual appeal, law firm appeal, Gala, acknowledgements, and overall donor relations.
  • Provide helpful information to Board members about their individual and institutional activities related to Lawyers Alliance, and research and prepare information about prospective and current Board members to support Board development efforts.
  • Assist in planning for Lawyers Alliance's 50th anniversary celebration, including opportunities to maximize the fundraising potential for this 2019 milestone.
  • Manage a current fundraising calendar, and monitor and meet deadlines to maximize the efficiency and results of Lawyers Alliance's development operation.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual operating budget, periodic financial reports, and cash flow reports as they pertain to projected and received contributions.
  • Maintain and update a database and other records of development information, working with colleagues to ensure that this information is consistent with Lawyers Alliance's accounting system.
  • Support Lawyers Alliance's additional strategic planning, fund development, program, marketing, and administrative activities, as requested.

Lawyers Alliance offers a chance to be involved in interesting mission-driven work, professional growth in a collegial environment, and generous benefits. Qualifications include a B.A. degree plus at least eight years of relevant development experience, including substantial experience with private foundation fundraising and special events. Familiarity with the legal sector and/or technical assistance is a plus. The ideal candidate will be organized, able to work with multiple constituencies, adept at working with a relational database and numbers, and excellent at multi-tasking and coordinating with a variety of people, messages, and audiences.

  Corporate Engagement Manager/Counsel
  Founded in 1969, Lawyers Alliance for New York is the leading provider of business and transactional legal services for nonprofit organizations that are improving the quality of life in New York City neighborhoods. Each year, Lawyers Alliance represents 700 nonprofits on 1,200 legal matters and works with 1,600 volunteer attorneys from law firms and corporations to provide these services. Lawyers Alliance's expertise-driven legal services help organizations to improve their programs, operations, and finances.

Lawyers Alliance seeks an experienced lawyer and/or project manager to play a central role in the expansion of its corporate pro bono and national program activities. Primary responsibilities of the Corporate Engagement Manager/Counsel include:

Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Recruitment and Volunteer Management:

  • Plan and implement corporate outreach strategies to attract and retain a strong and steady pool of quality pro bono attorneys from corporate legal departments to represent Lawyers Alliance's nonprofit clients.
  • Develop and coordinate pro bono opportunities that engage business and transactional attorneys from selected corporations in meaningful service opportunities, including legal representation of nonprofits, pro bono clinics, and educational trainings.
  • Expand and maintain institutional pro bono and philanthropic relationships with the corporations in Lawyers Alliance's volunteer network.
  • Write and distribute timely articles, analyses, and marketing materials, and make oral presentations, to encourage and support pro bono legal work by lawyers employed by corporations.
  • Coordinate and participate in Lawyers Alliance's client outreach, case placement, volunteer support and training, quality control, case closing, and program evaluation functions related to corporate pro bono projects.
  • Assist in Board development, honoree cultivation, volunteer recognition activities, and special events to further Lawyers Alliance's corporate pro bono and national network programs.

The responsibilities of this position will also include special projects, such as assisting Lawyers Alliance in organizing a national network of business law pro bono providers, serving different geographic regions around the United States, whose members share best practices, collaborate on joint legal and educational projects, and work with law firms and corporations to advance the field of business law pro bono nationwide. This position offers the opportunity to be involved in some of New York City's most dynamic public interest work and improve the delivery of pro bono services. Qualifications include at least 4 years of relevant work experience, preferably in addition to a J.D. or other relevant graduate school degree. Experience related to the corporate sector, volunteer management, corporate social responsibility, nonprofits, and relational databases are all a plus. The ideal candidate is able to work with varying people and constituencies, highly organized, and excellent at multi-tasking and coordinating a variety of messages, audiences, and projects.

This position begins immediately once filled and reports to Deputy Executive Director / Director of Institutional Advancement. Annual salary is approximately $68,000, depending on experience.   Staff Attorney

We help nonprofits to develop affordable housing, stimulate economic development, promote community arts and urban health, and operate vital programs for youth, the elderly, and other low-income New Yorkers. Each year, Lawyers Alliance represents 700 nonprofits on 1,200 legal matters and works with 1,600 volunteer attorneys to provide these services.

We are seeking an attorney to join our staff and focus on expanding our work with education nonprofits while also assisting a broad range of additional nonprofits. Our education clients provide early learn and Head Start programs, afterschool and in school enrichment programs, mentoring and tutoring programs. They also run charter schools and alternative public education programs, college and technical schools, and English language learner programs. Major responsibilities of this position include:

  • Serving the transactional and nonprofit law needs of a substantial client base of community-based and nonprofit groups;
  • Conducting client outreach, client screening, and client development to expand the provision of business law services to new and existing clients;
  • Serving as co-counsel and providing additional volunteer support to attorneys from top law firms and corporate legal departments that participate in Lawyers Alliance's pro bono program;
  • Organizing and teaching seminars for nonprofit managers and attorneys; and
  • Writing and publishing legal manuals and other materials for nonprofit managers and pro bono attorneys.

Lawyers Alliance is interested in hosting one or more fellows who have third-party funding:

Business/Transactional Law Fellowship: This fellow would work at Lawyers Alliance full-time as a staff attorney for one year and provide invaluable legal assistance to nonprofits that are serving low-income communities and creating a better New York, while he or she develops professional skills and practical experience. During the coming year, Lawyers Alliance expects that the fellow would work on a range of legal projects. From advising nonprofit clients on board governance, fundraising law, and workforce reduction issues, to helping them review and negotiate contracts and strategic alliances, the fellow and other Lawyers Alliance staff attorneys will provide much needed legal guidance to dynamic organizations that seek to help hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers in a time of great need. The fellow will help present workshops to nonprofit managers. In addition, the fellow will assist with client outreach and screenings, publications, legal research and policy, volunteer attorney support, and resource calls from members of the public with questions about legal issues related to the nonprofit sector. (1-2 positions each year, usually beginning between September and January)

Affordable Housing and Homeless Services Fellowship: This fellow would work at Lawyers Alliance full-time as a staff attorney for one year and provide invaluable assistance to nonprofits that are serving low-income communities and creating a better New York, while her or she develops professional skills and practical experience. The fellow would work directly with the Senior Staff Attorney for Affordable Housing and Homeless Services on a range of legal projects providing legal services to affordable housing developers and providers of shelter and social services to homeless persons and other special needs populations. At the end of a year, the fellow will have had the opportunity to gain invaluable direct experience in transactional real estate and affordable housing. In addition the fellow will assist in providing general real estate services to nonprofits. The fellow will also help prepare and present workshops to nonprofit managers, assist with client outreach, client intake, publications and legal research and assist in incorporation and tax exemption applications. (1 position each year, usually beginning in September or January)

By connecting lawyers, nonprofits, and communities, we help nonprofits to develop affordable housing, stimulate economic development, promote community arts, strengthen urban health, and operate and advocate for vital programs for children and young people, the elderly, and other low-income New Yorkers. Each year, Lawyers Alliance's staff and more than 1,600 volunteer attorneys represent more than 660 nonprofit organizations on 1,175 different legal matters.

Summer Legal Internship Program: Lawyers Alliance for New York hosts a 10 week unpaid summer internship program for law students interested in careers in business and transactional legal work and public interest work. This summer internship program provides opportunities for students to gain professional, practical work experience on legal matters in a dynamic learning environment. Summer law student interns work closely with staff attorneys to provide direct representation to clients on real estate, employment, intellectual property, tax, corporate governance and other nonprofit law areas critical to their operations. Working with our staff, law students will field and respond to legal questions and inquiries from clients and non-clients, conduct legal research, draft memoranda, attend workshops and webinars and assist in the development of new workshops and trainings, participate in client and volunteer attorney outreach, assist with updating and drafting publications, and conduct case monitoring. Specific examples of last summer's assignments include assisting with client intake for Legacy College Prep Charter School, assisting with a real estate construction loan closing for Community Access, updating materials in connection with a Lawyers Alliance employment workshop for nonprofit managers, and preparing a legal alert for distribution to clients on paid family leave in New York.
