  BACKGROUND

Each year, Lawyers Alliance for New York improves the quality of life in low-income New York City communities by providing nonprofits with vital legal services. The organization's program priorities help nonprofits to create vibrant, livable communities in five impact areas: housing and shelter, economic opportunity, quality education, urban health, and community arts. Lawyers Alliance projects strengthen nonprofits' programs, operations, and finances. The organization brings the legal and practical expertise necessary for community-based and other nonprofits to make physical, social, and economic improvements in city neighborhoods where millions of children, families, the elderly, homeless, immigrants, and other low-income and disadvantaged New Yorkers live and work.

Since its founding nearly 50 years ago, Lawyers Alliance has grown into New York City's leading pro bono provider of business and transactional legal services for nonprofit organizations and social enterprises. With a talented staff of 22, a $3.2 million annual budget, and an expansive volunteer program, Lawyers Alliance provides high quality legal counsel and education while saving nonprofits countless dollars each year.

In 2016/2017, Lawyers Alliance provided direct legal assistance to 668 nonprofit clients on 1,211 projects and offered more than 1,000 informational consultations through its Resource Call Hotline. It also grew its staff-supported pro bono program to more than 1,800 volunteer attorneys in an effort to better leverage the legal community's professional skills and time to benefit more nonprofits. Recent program highlights include:

  • Expanding special initiatives that assist healthcare providers in navigating the intricacies of New York State Medicaid reform and that provide guidance to nonprofits seeking to manage the risks of increased advocacy during a period of post-election uncertainty.
  • Enabling more than 200 community redevelopment organizations, such as affordable housing groups, Business Improvement Districts, and workforce development organizations, to address contract, real estate, tax and other legal issues related to their efforts to revitalize neighborhoods and support individuals and local businesses.
  • Successfully advocating for state nonprofit law amendments that improve nonprofit governance and make legal compliance more manageable for community-based and other resource-constrained nonprofits.
  • Leading a national network of pro bono programs that are expanding the availability and quality of legal services for nonprofits in fifteen regions across the country.

In the coming year, Lawyers Alliance aims to deepen its impact on low-income communities by representing more than 700 impactful clients on 1,300 legal matters with the assistance of its large network of volunteers drawn from major law firms and corporations. In addition, it seeks to expand its role as an advocate for New York nonprofits and enhance its work as a business law pro bono leader at the national level.

To support this growth, Lawyers Alliance seeks a Director of Development to strengthen, build and advance its established and successful fundraising program.

POSITION

The Director of Development will report to the Deputy Executive Director/Director of Institutional Advancement and serve as a partner on all fundraising strategy. S/he will be responsible for the management, growth and diversification of a multi-faceted development program focused on steady and incremental change in the principal areas of foundation, law firm, event, corporate and individual support. In addition to being adept at creating a methodical and strategic fundraising strategy, s/he must also be a hands-on, nimble project manager and leader capable of working collaboratively across the organization with multiple external audiences.

This is a special opportunity to partner with highly intelligent and passionate senior leadership and staff seeking to make a real and lasting impact on low-income communities.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborate with the Board's Development Committee and executive staff to prepare and implement a comprehensive strategic annual fundraising plan to achieve annual budgeted goals for contributed revenues from foundations, law firms, individuals, banks and other corporations, and special events.
  • Support and advise Lawyers Alliance's Board development efforts, working with leadership to develop meaningful opportunities for engagement with existing Board members, recruit new Board members, and remain connected with prior ones.
  • Lead the expansion of private foundation funding by securing contributions from new funders and increased grants from repeat funders. Manage Lawyers Alliance's foundation funder relationships. Research and prepare clear and persuasive reports and appeals (letters of inquiry, grant proposals, donor appeals, and fundraising reports).
  • Develop and execute the annual Business Law & Leadership Gala including planning, honoree and sponsor recruitment, donor outreach, event logistics and program, and marketing of the event.
  • Plan and direct a successful annual law firm appeal, chaired by a law firm managing partner, to raise more than $900,000 in contributions from national and New York firms. Also prepare and carry out strategic outreach to banks and corporations and pursue relevant government funding opportunities.
  • Supervise the Development Coordinator's work for the individual and law firm appeals, Gala, acknowledgements, and donor relations. Support the coordinator's professional growth and skill development.
  • Act as a partner to senior leadership in the planning and execution of Lawyers Alliance's 50th anniversary celebration. Help develop and carry out strategy to maximize the fundraising potential associated with this milestone.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual operating budget, periodic financial reports, and cash flow reports.
  • Additional planning, fund development, program, marketing, and related activities, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least seven years of fundraising experience with progressive responsibility; Bachelors' degree.
  • Substantial experience with private foundation fundraising and corporate outreach, as well as special events and individual giving.
  • Strong analytic and project management skills; attention to detail; demonstrated experience organizing and executing complex or multiple time-sensitive projects, including meeting financial goals and project deadlines.
  • Excellent people management skills.
  • Strong and clear written and verbal communication skills; outstanding interpersonal skills, judgment, and ability to collaborate with a wide range of colleagues.
  • Creative and methodical approach to fundraising, patience and an eye for both near term and long-range goals.
  • Familiarity with the legal sector and/or fundraising for a nonprofit providing technical assistance to other organizations is a plus.
  • Experience with a donor management database system.

  Staff Attorney - Urban Health Initiative
  Lawyers Alliance for New York is the leading provider of business and transactional legal services for nonprofit organizations that are improving the quality of life in New York City neighborhoods. We help nonprofits to develop affordable housing, stimulate economic development, promote community arts and urban health, and operate vital programs for youth, the elderly, and other low-income New Yorkers. Each year, Lawyers Alliance represents 700 nonprofits on 1,200 legal matters and works with 1,800 volunteer attorneys to provide these services.

We are seeking an attorney to join our staff and lead our Urban Health program area which works with nonprofit clients supporting public health efforts, addressing food insecurity, and providing behavioral health services to low-income and disadvantaged New Yorkers.

Major responsibilities of this position include:

  • Serving the transactional and nonprofit law needs of a substantial client base of community-based and nonprofit groups;
  • Conducting client outreach, client screening and client development to expand the provision of business law services to new and existing clients;
  • Serving as co-counsel and providing additional volunteer support to attorneys from top law firms and corporate legal departments that participate in Lawyers Alliance's pro bono program;
  • Organizing and teaching seminars for nonprofit managers and attorneys; and
  • Writing and publishing legal manuals and other materials for nonprofit managers and pro bono attorneys.

Lawyers Alliance is interested in hosting one or more fellows who have third-party funding:

Business/Transactional Law Fellowship: This fellow would work at Lawyers Alliance full-time as a staff attorney for one year and provide invaluable legal assistance to nonprofits that are serving low-income communities and creating a better New York, while he or she develops professional skills and practical experience. During the coming year, Lawyers Alliance expects that the fellow would work on a range of legal projects. From advising nonprofit clients on board governance, fundraising law, and workforce reduction issues, to helping them review and negotiate contracts and strategic alliances, the fellow and other Lawyers Alliance staff attorneys will provide much needed legal guidance to dynamic organizations that seek to help hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers in a time of great need. The fellow will help present workshops to nonprofit managers. In addition, the fellow will assist with client outreach and screenings, publications, legal research and policy, volunteer attorney support, and resource calls from members of the public with questions about legal issues related to the nonprofit sector. (1-2 positions each year, usually beginning between September and January)

Affordable Housing and Homeless Services Fellowship: This fellow would work at Lawyers Alliance full-time as a staff attorney for one year and provide invaluable assistance to nonprofits that are serving low-income communities and creating a better New York, while her or she develops professional skills and practical experience. The fellow would work directly with the Senior Staff Attorney for Affordable Housing and Homeless Services on a range of legal projects providing legal services to affordable housing developers and providers of shelter and social services to homeless persons and other special needs populations. At the end of a year, the fellow will have had the opportunity to gain invaluable direct experience in transactional real estate and affordable housing. In addition the fellow will assist in providing general real estate services to nonprofits. The fellow will also help prepare and present workshops to nonprofit managers, assist with client outreach, client intake, publications and legal research and assist in incorporation and tax exemption applications. (1 position each year, usually beginning in September or January)

  Internship Opportunities

Summer Legal Internship Program: Lawyers Alliance for New York hosts a 10 week unpaid summer internship program for law students interested in careers in business and transactional legal work and public interest work. This summer internship program provides opportunities for students to gain professional, practical work experience on legal matters in a dynamic learning environment. Summer law student interns work closely with staff attorneys to provide direct representation to clients on real estate, employment, intellectual property, tax, corporate governance and other nonprofit law areas critical to their operations. Working with our staff, law students will field and respond to legal questions and inquiries from clients and non-clients, conduct legal research, draft memoranda, attend workshops and webinars and assist in the development of new workshops and trainings, participate in client and volunteer attorney outreach, assist with updating and drafting publications, and conduct case monitoring. Specific examples of last summer's assignments include assisting with client intake for Legacy College Prep Charter School, assisting with a real estate construction loan closing for Community Access, updating materials in connection with a Lawyers Alliance employment workshop for nonprofit managers, and preparing a legal alert for distribution to clients on paid family leave in New York.
