Urban Health

Lawyers Alliance helps to promote preventative health, food security, healthy aging, and making New York City a greener place.

Clients include senior centers, afterschool programs, food and agricultural programs, parks and green spaces, educational organizations, nutrition and exercise programs, and nonprofits advocating for legislation and policies that eliminate health disparities and improve New Yorkers' lives.

FamilyCook Productions brings people of all ages together around delicious, affordable fresh food while positively impacting their health and well-being. The organization approached Lawyers Alliance for assistance related to its nonprofit structure, operations, and active programs to encourage healthy living.

Pro bono counsel from Alston & Bird LLP reviewed and revised FamilyCook's employment policies. Additionally, the Alston & Bird team represented FamilyCook's Board and structured a new license agreement with founder Lynn Fredericks and her company in order to allow FamilyCook to continue to use Fredericks' programs. The Alston & Bird attorneys addressed FamilyCook's legal concerns, enabling the nonprofit to further its programs and continue to reach its more than 100,000 constituents.

"The employee handbook is perfect: easy for our employees to understand, without jargon. The intellectual property and licensing issue was potentially very delicate, and the team navigated the issue beautifully, and with total transparency. The end result is that the Board and I are both comfortable with our agreement and FamilyCook can continue to run smoothly."
